OS Map Ref: NX 862 932

In the centre of Keir village - drive drown a side road, past the church and churchyard and then follow (on foot) the signs to Kirkpatrick McMillan's grave.

Number of CWGC burials 0

Keir is also known as Keirmill.

This small graveyard is notable as the burial place of Kirkpatrick McMillan, the inventor of the bicycle.

This stone mentions 3 brothers, the first of whom (Peter Cowie) died on 5th January 1911 in South Africa and that may be military related.

The family seem to be great colonialists because the other two sons were in the Canadian and Australian forces respectively.

Major Hoggan of Waterside who died 13th April 1809 aged 67 years

and

Lieut Col William Hoggan HMRIS
Sixth son of Major G Hoggan of Waterside
born 12th March 1798
after a distinguished active service in India of 30 years
for which he bore several medals
...............died 21st March 1860
