To the North of the Shetland Mainland is the Island of Yell,
just a couple of miles along the B9081 road from the ferry
pier at Bay of Ulsta is the tiny hamlet of Hamnavoe and here
in the churchyard is the collective grave and memorial for 7
airmen of the RAF and RCAF who died when their Catalina
flying boat Z2148 crashed into a hillside at Arisdale at night
and in bad weather on 19th January 1942. There were just 3
survivors.
