Lady Old Churchyard on the island of Sanday one of the
Orkneys is situated in the tiny hamlet of Lady off the B9069
road from Saltess on the east coast to Little Isegarth in the
west. The old church is now roofless and gravestones here
date back centuries. Only two Commonwealth graves are listed
as being in this cemetery, however neither could be found on
my visit.

husband of Betty Aileen Marais.

LADY OLD CHURCHYARD

Sub/Lt Marais was an Observer in 821 Squadron at Hatston,
he was in a crew of 3 on patrol in a Swordfish L7635 when
due possibly to engine failure they were forced to land in the
sea,all 3 crew were killed including Pilot Sub/Lt F.C.Saunders
and Telegraphist Air Gunner Naval Airman 1st Class G.H.Gaynon.

when she was lost off Orkney,Cause unknown on 28/6/1940.
