This is probably a really silly question but I came a cross a couple of markers of Old Contemptibles 1914 Aug 5th to Nov 22nd. Does this mean they died then?
Sorry but I dont know much about this stuff. |

If there were no names on the markers could be that someone is just commemorating the Old Contemptibles. Were there any names?

Have yoy tried CWGC or SNWM? If they died, which one assumes they did they should be recorded.

One is the same name as the stone it is next to who died sometime later so I assume it is him.

GW
The marker has Old Contemptibles Association on it. I take it this marker is based on the badge of the Association which in turn is based on the 1914 Star (aka Mons Star) in which case these are for men wo survived and died at home after the War.
This is just a guess but I suspect these have been placed on unmarked graves a few years after the burial by the Association to make sure their former members were commemorated.

It was worth mentioning, I've never seen one before.
Cheers

Very interesting.
I have never seen this type of plaque before but have heard about them.
As Adam suggested they were placed in memory of those Old Contemptibles who survived the Great War.
The Old Contemptibles Association was founded around 1925 and had nearly 200 branches countrywide at one time. _________________ There must be a place under the sun where hearts of Olden Glory grow young ..... |
