|
|
Anson N 9857 left 19 OTU RAF KINLOSS on 13th April 1941 to fly to Cape Wrath and Oban and then back to the Training Unit at RAF Kinloss but it failed to return so a search was made but it was no gain.
On 25 May 1941 a Shepherd , Mr Law was on Beinn an Fhurain and he found the crash site with 5 bodies found inside the remains of the fuselage , wrapped in their parachutes . 3 had survived the crash landing but had died of exposure . The Body of Sgt Mitchell was discovered some half mile away sheltering under a large boulder . He had died of exposure
It was decided that to remove the bodies from this location on Beinn an Fhurain would be too hazzardous so the police and estate workers buried the casualties at the crash site and a memorial was sited at the Inchnadamph churchyard listing the casualties on the Beinn an Fhurain |

There is a website listing this RAF crash of WW2 and others in Scotland
http://www.archieraf.co.uk/scs/ansonn9857.html
I did not go up to the crash scene after finding the Inchnadamph kirkyard war graves and this memorial to the men located at 2,300 feet
