Hi all
I came across this site while doing some family history research. I am in Australia but my parents came from Scotland. I am after a few graves but dont know if you can help. My Dad's Father was in WW1 as noted on his marriage form. He was William Simpson and died in 1955 in Coatbridge so I presume he is buried there. The marriage form said he was with the 3rd R.S. Terr. army in France ( that was 1917). As he was not killed in the war would you still have his grave?
Also in doing the family tree I came across a James Lawson who is noted in the 1901 census as being retired from the army and a Sergeant in the 26th Regiment of Foot (The Cameronians). He died in 1901 in Lanark Lanarkshire so would you have anything on him?
Going back to my Grandfather, his wife was first married to a Peter McIntosh who died in France in WW1 and I have a picture of his grave from the CWGC and records I can access from Ancestry site. I noticied a wall memorial picture on your site which lists a Peter and James McIntosh at the Wall of Tolbooth Canongate. From the 1901 census I have him being in Canongate and he had a brother James so is this a record of them?
I hope someone can be of help. It is hard when I am so far away.
Thanks for your help

Robert Simpson

Hello Robert.

Welcome to the Forum. Smile

Your grandfather William Simpson - unless the family erected a gravestone and mentioned his war service, it's doubtful if we'd have a photo. The best way forward to find where he's buried would be to contact North Lanarkshire Council:

http://www.northlan.gov.uk/living+here/births+marriages+and+deaths/deaths/cemeteries+service+information.html

Cemetery Admin Assistant
Grounds Maintenance, Burial Grounds and Cemeteries
Old Edinburgh Road, Bellshill, ML4 3JS.

Tel: 01698 506300
e-mail: cscemeteriesservices@northlan.gov.uk

If you give them as much info as you can, they should be able to tell you where he is (cemetery name, section and lair no.). If you decide to go ahead and contact North Lanarkshire Council and are successful in locating your grandfather's grave, please let us know. We have already surveyed most cemeteries local to Coatbridge, but if there's a grave we've 'missed', eventually someone will get round to going back. Obviously we'd need a copy of the location as most of the cemeteries are huge!

As regards Peter and James McIntosh - probably the best idea would be to post a query on our sister site, the Scottish War Memorial Project:

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/

Include as much info on Peter as you can - CWGC + any other details you have - Census, family info etc., as any snippet can make a big difference when trying to verify any individual.

Sorry Robert, I meant to say that I wouldn't know where to start with James Lawson.

A good few of the forum members have knowledge of old regiments so hopefully one of them might be able to help.
