This gravestone commemorates the Joan Bisset's father and two husbands, all of whom were military men. I found the first husband.

Transcription:

"In loving memory of Joan daughter of General C F I (?) Graham and widow of Captain F Bisset and Colonel E R McConnel (?) died 13th March 1962"

This one caught my eye because of the RAF badge. It turns out he was the uncle of the husband of a teacher in Dalry school (they live in Parton now). But here is the mystery..........he died in New Zealand and, as far as the family know, was buried there. So is the stone on an empty grave or was he cremated and his ashes returned to be interred without the local family knowing?

Colonel Patrick Sanderson of Glenlaggan who commanded the Royal Scots Greys born Aug 29 1844 died Feb 21 1902

I have confirmed from the family that the Porteous stone marks an empty grave. He was cremated and his ashes scattered in New Zealand. We can only presume that the grave (lair) was paid for in advance so some members of the family decided to go ahead with the stone.

I wish to advise you about the grave of my dear father Andrew Clingan Porteous which is located at Parton church and is featured on your website.

My father served in the RAF during WW11. He served as a WAG and then Air Signaller. He served in Palestine, India, Burma & SE Asia. He was a Warrant Officer when he demobbed in 1947. He flew on DH Rapides, Ansons and DC3 Dakotas.

Service Number: 1893823

My family emigrated to NZ in 1965. My mother and father moved to Australia in 1986 where he eventually died from the effects of complications from a car accident in 1992.

Many of our relatives live or have lived in the Parton area for a long time.

My fathers ashes were spread over the small field above the house at Barbershall Farm overlooking Loch Ken in the mid 90's whilst we were on holiday there. A lair was purchased by my mother and Dad's headstone was placed next to his father David. Uncle Dick was consulted about this as he was the senior living brother of our family at the time.

The headstone was erected as a memorial to him and really looks in good condition.

My mother will be 84 next week and she will be so delighted to see this photo.

I am Gary Porteous, only son of Andrew. I served 21 years in the RNZAF and was also aircrew, serving as a C130 Air Loadmaster. I also was a MALM (Warrant Officer) and am a veteran of the first Gulf War.
I spent 6 years as an aircrew instructor with the UAE Air Force on retiring from the RNZAF. For the last 10 years we have lived in Australia and I now serve as a Senior Protective Service Officer for the Qld State Protective Service.

I thank you for having my Dad's photo on your site. I hope that this information provided will help with the project.

The late Richard 'Dick' Porteous of Barbershall was present at the spreading of the ashes of my father Andrew. Present that day also was:
