Navidale Churchyard, Kildonan
Location: Off the A9 North of Helmsdale. Between Road and sea
OS Ref: ND 041 161
There are two CWGC headstones and one headstone with a military inscription in this small churchyard.

SUTHERLAND, Donald

Died: Died of wounds 14.3.1940 Lawson Memorial Hospital, Golspie
Age: 57
Parents: Alexander (fisherman) and Margaret Sutherland
Home: Stafford Street, Helmsdale
Job: Merchant Sailor
Notes: ‘S.S. Gretafield’ an Oil Tanker registered at Newcastle-upon-Tyne to the Northern Petroleum Tank Company. Built 1928. 10191 tons. Torpedoed twice 15 miles East of Wick by U-57 whilst carrying oil to Invergordon. Second torpedo ignited fuel. 27 crew rescued by local fishermen. 11 crew died. 3 unidentified bodies washed ashore and buried at Latheron, Caithness.
Burnt out wreck of the ‘Gretafield’ drifted ashore at Dunbeath several days later.
(U-57 rammed and sunk by Norwegian ship S.S. ‘Rona’ in baltic on 3.9.40)

Memorials: Listed on the Kildonan War Memorial, Helmsdale
Recorded in the Merchant Navy Roll of Honour, The Scottish National War Memorial, Edinburgh Castle

It's impossible to see on this photograph. The sun was shining directly onto it and I couldn't get a good image of it but Pte Sutherland is also listed second from bottom on this gravestone
