I visited this cemetery today. It is located at Oosterbeek, 7 km west of Arnhem in eastern Holland. In it lie buried more than 1,500 Allied casualties of the abortive attempt to take the Rhine bridge at Arnhem in September 1944. The film "A Bridge Too Far" has this operation as its subject matter, although it was in fact filmed at Deventer, 22 miles to the north. The historical facts are well-known, and the cemetery pays testimony to the bravery and heroism of those poor lads who gave their all in an attempt to release Holland and Belgium from the yoke of Nazi Germany. The area of Holland north of the rivers Rhine, Waal and Meuse had to wait for up to eight months for their final liberation. The failure of Operation Market Garden was the cause of that delay.
I am currently processing the 99 pictures of the graves of Scottish casualties, that lie buried at Oosterbeek. An image of the cemetery will also be provided as soon as that task is complete. If time allows, I shall also visit the Moscowa (sic) Cemetery in Arnhem. |
