Culross West Kirk Churchyard

This churchyard is situated on a farm road to the west of Culross, behind Dunimarle castle.

It contains one war grave and has a number of military inscriptions, one first world war and the rest prior to 1900.

Died 4/1/1916
Age 49

Additional information:
Alexander lived at 4 Abbey Crescent High Valleyfield at the time of his enlistment and was married to Robina Fowler.
According to his service documents he lied about his age on enlisting, he only served for 157 days before his death, he had at least 3 long periods in hospital and was sent to the 2nd SGA in Edinburgh with a view to discharge shortly before he died.
His records are available on ancestry.com and i have downloaded them if anyone wants more information

Name: David Bell Thomson

Regiment: 1/5 Gordon Highlanders
Age: 21
Awards: MM and bar.
Died: 29th of July 1918

David probably won the bar to his military medal during the battle of Buzancy in July 1918 the last major action his regiment participated in. Additional information was obtained from Caroline Morrisey's site on the 1/5 th Gordon Highlanders

Also around the church yard are stones with the following military connections:

Name: Lt Col John Dalgleish
Regiment: 21st Regiment of Foot
Died: 19th of January 1829

Lt Col John Dalgleish was colonel of the regiment from 1796 till he retired in 1797. He served in the American War of Independance and was taken prisoner at Saratoga along with General Burgoyne.

Name: Laurence Dalgleish
Regiment: 4th Light Dragoons
Died: 4th of August 1884

Name Laurence Johnston
Rank Captain
Regiment Royal Scots Greys
Died 14th of December 1833
Age 62

Name Laurence Johnston
Rank Major
Regiment 26th Madras Native Infantry
Died 22nd of April 1888
