John Houston has provided two interesting headstones from Sorn Parish churchyard in Ayrshire.

One shows a gravestone paid for by a local man who emigated to the USA. He lists all the family members who had travelled far and wide. He also lists three of his army "buddies" who died during the First World War. I don't recall ever seeing something like this before.

The other shows a man who served on the SAS in 1943-46 and has a French plaque at the bottom.

John mentions that every year a French delegation arrives at the rave to pay their respects.

Can anyone shed any light on the story behind Major Frederick William Augustine Oakes. The plaque suggests a link to the French Resistance and in the second half of 1944 the SAS were operating behind German lines in France alongside the Resistance.

According to this website Frederick Oates served in 2 Regiment SAS in 1943-45

The three "Buddies" were members of 1/5th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Tommy McGregor b. Aberdeen (Pte. 241361) and James Henderson b. Sorn (Pte. 240335) died 1 October 1918.
Tommy Dunsmore b. Muirkirk (Cpl. 240846) died 2 June 1918.
