Erected in loving memory of our dear father William Ross who died at Balnabruach, Tarrel 29th Dec 1893 aged 66 years. Also of our brothers Robert who died 14th July 1879 aged 6 years, John who was killed in action in France 9th Oct 1917 aged 34 years. Also our loving mother who died 2nd Feb 1929 aged 87 years. Interred in Cathcart Cemetery, Glasgow(Grace Ross) Also of their sons William and Michael and of their daughter Mary. Also Isabella died 11th Oct 1949. Jane died 22nd June 1953. Christina died 3rd Sep 1947. Grace died 11th Oct 19*2.

In loving memory of Isabella MacKenzie beloved wife of William Calder who died at Petley 6th Sept 1916 and the said William Calder who died at Carn-Bhren 12th July 1951. Also of Elizabeth Mary Cameron, daughter of John Cameron and Isabella MacKenzie who died in Inverness 18th April 1958 aged 74 years. In loving memory of John Ross, killed in action in France 9th Oct 1917 aged 34 years. And of his son William Cameron Calder (Cameron) died 13th March 1932 aged 17 years. Also of his wife Matilda Cameron daughter of John Cameron and Isabella MacKenzie who died in Inverness 5th March 1965 aged 81 years.

In memory of Rebecca Bruce, beloved wife of Alex Taylor, Portmahomack died 7th Aug 1888 aged 67 years and their daughters Rebecca died 14th Dec 1885 aged 15 years, Christina died 29th Aug 1888 aged 24 years. Also their grandson Cpl John S Taylor RAFVR died 25th April 1947 aged 42 years. Also Andrew Murdoch died 1st March 1935 aged 20 years.

Sacred to the memory of Patrick 3rd son and William the 4th son of Donald McLeod Esq of Geanies the former of whom Lieutenant Colonel of the LXXV111th Regiment of Foot having early entered into the army served with the highest reputation in the low countries at the cape of good hope in the East Indies, in Italy at the memorable Battle of Maida where he eminently distinguished himself at the head of that gallant Regiment and Lastly in Egypt where he fell gloriously in the unfortunate Battle of El Hamed on the XX1st of April MDCCCVII in the 32nd year of his age. The latter a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy in which he had served with zeal and honour from his earliest youth highly esteemed by the commanders with whom he sailed, and respected by the whole circle of his acquaintance as a brave and meritorious Officer died at Lisbon the XXIXth of March MDCCCV in the 28th year of his age.

Patrick McLeod, Lt Col. 78th Highlanders fell at The Battle of El Hamed in 1807. El Hamed or AL Hamed is near Rosetta (where the stone was found)

The 1807 campaign to Alexandria was a disaster for the 78th and many of the men were captured by the Ottomans under Muhammed Ali on 21st April 1807.

At least one man of the 78th converted to Islam and achieved high rank in the service of the Ottomans. Thomas Keith from Edinburgh became Ibrahim Aga and quickly rose through the ranks of the Marmelukes and later became Governor of Medina, one of the holiest sites in Islam, before being killed in 1815.
