Daniel Tennant, killed in action in France 6th June 1916 aged 27.

Daniel (born 15th October 1890 at Dunipace) was the son of Daniel & Susan Tennant (nee Montgomery), formerly Cram. Father Daniel died 13th March 1891. His mother then married Thomas Chalmers, although I can't find a marriage certificate.

The information was taken from the Death Certificate of Susan Chalmers, died 16th January 1947 and also states

Susan Chalmers, Widow of
1st, Matthew Cram, Iron Moulder
2nd, Daniel Tennant, Iron Dresser
3rd, Thomas Chalmers, Coal Miner
Maiden Surname, Montgomery

So . . . . . can anybody find him for me??

Anne

Hi

I think I can help you with this one. I have been trying to read the details on the headstone for this family but can't make it all out. Thomas Chalmers is related to me and I have details of the marriages of Susan Montgomery. Hope to hear from you If you could give me details of the headstone I would be very grateful.. If you would like I can give you details of marriages. cheers,Lynn

Hi Lynn,

Welcome to the Scottish War Graves Project!!

The following is my transcription of the full MI. I think I've got all the dates correct!

In loving memory of THOMAS CHALMERS husband of Susan Montgomery
Who died 17th February 1930 aged 66 years
ROBERT their son died 19th December 1935 aged 30 years
Also ARTHUR and MARGARET who died in infancy
Also her sons JOHN TENNANT died 5th February 1905 aged 19 years
DANIEL TENNANT killed in action in France 6th June 1916 aged 27 years
Also the above SUSAN MONTGOMERY died 16th January 1947 aged 85 years

I'd be grateful for any info you have on the family as I try to add as many snippets on every individual as I can at any and every opportunity. Over the last few years, I've photographed every existing/legible stone in Denny Cemetery in the hope of building up a database of sorts on local families. If you send me your personal e-mail address by Private Message, I can send you a couple of high res. photos which (in theory) should be much easier to make out.

Anne

Could this be your man? Could the sixes be eights so 6 June 1916 is actually 8 June 1918? Daniel Tennant / Tennent is not a common name and it's the same place of birth...

SDGW

TENNENT, Daniel
Service Number 12768
Date Death 08/06/1918
Place of birth Dunipace Stirling
Other 6th Bn.
SNWM roll SCOTTISH CASUALTIES EXTRACTED FROM ENGLISH REGIMENTS
Rank Pte
Theatre of death F.& F.

CWGC

TENNENT, DANIEL
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Dorsetshire Regiment
Unit Text: 6th Bn.
Date of Death: 08/06/1918
Service No: 12768
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 48.
Memorial: POZIERES MEMORIAL

The SDGW CD-Rom has him enlisting in Denny but doesn't give a place of residence. It also doesn't give any former regiments he served in but I'm surprised a man enlisting in Denny only served in the Dorsetshire Regt!

Hi Adam,

Thanks to the help from Lynn 'prowfamily', we've determined that Daniel was the same one as you've found. I agree, it does seem a bit strange if he only served with the Dorsets but I don't suppose we'll ever known the reason for that.

As you said, Tennant isn't that common a name and for 2 Daniel Tennants of the same age both coming from Dunipace and enlisting in Denny . . . . . I think we can be pretty sure this is 'our' man.

Post now edited with all the extra information.

Anne

P.S. Nope, not my bad eyesight this time - definately 1916 on the stone!!

Anne,

I suspect that yours is not the only grave to have conflicting dates: although 2 years different is, I agree, unusual!
