Can anyone shed any light on the following . . . . ?
No rank, regiment or dates for brothers David and Thomas Stark killed in action in France 19??.
Sons of Thomas and Ann Stark (nee Kerr), presumably of Glasgow.
(Western Necropolis Cemetery).

Thanks Paul,
I love a good puzzle too but I get a bit fed up not being able to find folk when it happens on a regular basis.

Does this mean they died in the same year?

Yes, I think it does mean they both died in the same year (which might discount the David which Paul found)
Stranger things have happened though . . . . .

In that case, David might be this man.
Name: STARK, DAVID
Initials: D
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Gordon Highlanders
Unit Text: 7th Bn.
Age: 24
Date of Death: 26/03/1918
Service No: S/43191
Additional information: Brother of Mrs. F. Compton, of 428, Govan St., South Side, Glasgow.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Bay 8 and 9.
Memorial: ARRAS MEMORIAL
This is David and Thomas's entry from the 1901 census:
Age 4
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1897
Relationship: Son
Father's Name: Thomas
Mother's Name: Anne
Gender: Male
Where born: Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Registration Number: 644/9
Registration district: Kelvin
Civil Parish: Glasgow St Vincent
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 41 Dorset Street
ED: 33
Page: 22 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 114
Line: 3
Roll: CSSCT1901_299
Household Members: Name Age
Anne Stark 36
Anne Stark 2
David Stark 4
Mary Scott Stark 8
Thomas Stark 37
Thomas Stark 6
If you can prove that Mrs F Compton was either Anne Stark or Mary Scott Stark, then that proves this is your man.

Glasgow Roll of Honour has the following:
Only one David:
Stark, David. Private, HLI. Address 449 St Vincent Street
Two Thomases. Here's their details:
Private, HLI. Address 71 George Street.
Private, Scottish Rifles. Address 449 St Vincent Street.
So I would say that the first David Stark that Paul found was correct, and that this is your Thomas:
Name: STARK, THOMAS
Initials: T
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Unit Text: 5th Bn.
Date of Death: 29/10/1916
Service No: 6649
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 4 D.
Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL |

David,
You forgot one thing about Thomas - his CWGC entry that Paul found earlier lists the correct parents, Thomas and Annie Stark (nee Kerr).
Back to the drawing board for now then . . . . . ?
Anne
P.S. Is it only me who has problems finding folk? |
