I decided to start another thread as I thought putting on all the queries on one thread would end up in a muddle.

JAMES YEATS killed in action in France 25th September 1915 age 24, Son of William and Jane Yeats (nee Dabbs)

From his birth certificate: Born 28.05.1891 at 41 Academy Street, Coatbridge.

CWGC
Name: YEATES
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lance Corporal
Regiment/Service: Northumberland Fusiliers
Unit Text: 16th Bn.
Date of Death: 02/04/1917
Service No: 14802
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: I. P. 1.
Cemetery: SAVY BRITISH CEMETERY

Then there's this one:

Name: YEATS, JAMES LAURENCE
Initials: J L
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Northumberland Fusiliers
Unit Text: 12th/13th Bn.
Age: 19
Date of Death: 03/10/1918
Service No: 62041
Additional information: Son of James and Georgina Yeats, of 8, Jasmine Place, Aberdeen. (On SNWM he is listed as being born in Airdrie)
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: III. C. 2.
Cemetery: GOUZEAUCOURT NEW BRITISH CEMETERY

I think this is the same man as above on SNWM, (although his middle name is spelt differently)

SNWM
Surname YEATS
Firstname James Lawrence
Service Number 62041
Date Death 03/10/1918
Decoration
Place of birth Airdrie
Other 12/13th Bn. formerly 85915, Fife & Forfar Yeomanry.
SNWM roll SCOTTISH CASUALTIES EXTRACTED FROM ENGLISH REGIMENTS
Rank Unknown
Theatre of death F.& F.

and again

Surname YEATS
Firstname James Lawrence
Service Number 85915
Date Death 03/10/1918
Decoration
Place of birth Airdrie
Other latterly 62041, 12/13th Bn. The Northumberland Fus.
SNWM roll FIFE AND FORFAR YEOMANRY
Rank Unknown
Theatre of death F.& F.

I can't find the 1st James Yeats on SNWM as being killed in 1917, neither can I find him killed in any other year and I certainly can't find ne killed in 1915!!

I'm beginning to think I'm losing the plot here!

Anne,

How does this fit?

Name: YEATES, JAMES SQUAIR
Initials: J S
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Age: 21
Date of Death: 25/09/1915
Service No: 7409
Additional information: Son of Elsie Squair Yeates, of 6, West Richmond St., Edinburgh, and the late Francis Joseph Yeates.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: C. 6.
Cemetery: CAMBRIN CHURCHYARD EXTENSION

25 Sep 15 was day one of the Battle of Loos; the graves of 1st Cameronians are, according to CWGC, from the Loos battle.

Roxy

Just noticed that his family does not agree - never mind!

I saw this man too Roxy, but as you noticed - wrong parents. I downloaded his birth certificate to see if there were any hints, but all it proves is that none of the ones I found are the right ones!

I thought I had the SNWM search sussed (I could never get it to work until recently) but now I seem to give myself more mysteries. Rolling Eyes

From Glasgow Evening Times Roll of Honour:

Yeates James Home - Glasgow Private Royal Scots Fusiliers 6th 20-Oct-15 Page - 3 Portrait - Y Killed

So (assuming that's the right guy) I think that makes him this man:

Surname YATES
Firstname James
Service Number 15349
Date Death 29/09/1915
Decoration
Place of birth
Other 6th Bn.
SNWM roll THE ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS
Rank Pte
Theatre of death F.& F.

Name: YATES, JAMES
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots Fusiliers
Unit Text: 6th Bn.
Date of Death: 29/09/1915
Service No: 15349
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 46 to 49.
Memorial: LOOS MEMORIAL

Name spelt wrongly, no parents on SNWM or CWGC, and wrong date of death - that was a toughie - I hope it's right.

Good one Paul - jings - you guys come to the rescue every time!!

Ready for the next one?

Right, here goes . . . . .

I can't find this man on either SNWM or CWGC but maybe it's not a war death?

WILLIAM TENNANT, R.G.A., died 5th September 1920 aged 24
Son of Robert and Isabella Tennant.

Anne,

I did look at 'Yates' on CWGC - but I looked at 25 Sep 15 (3 from 10 SR alone!)

A good spot; well done Paul.

Last mystery (in the meantime - till the weather improves)

ROBERT WILSON, Edmonton Fusiliers, 2nd Batt. Canadians, killed at Ypres 25th April 1915 age 28
Son of James and Marion Wilson (nee Grainger)

I can't find any reference to 'Edmonton Fusiliers' but I thought it might be this man:

Name: WILSON
Initials: R
Nationality: Canadian
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment)
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Date of Death: 26/04/1915
Service No: 18409
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: II. M. 14.
Cemetery: POPERINGHE OLD MILITARY CEMETERY

Re William Tennant. Not listed on Glasgow Evening Times Roll of Honour and I am pretty sure he is not in SNWM or CWGC. It could be that you have found an uncommemorated man!

There are 2 William Tennants RGA with Medal Index Cards - Regt Numbers 55525 and 152089 so he may well be one of those, note that 55525 has a second initial of H. Nobody with these numbers in CWGC or SNWM. You can order the MICs online from TNA at £3.50 each, you might be lucky and these 2 might be on the same sheet.

Not sure of the exact criteria for listing on CWGC but I thought that if he served in uniform, even if he was then discharged but he died in the period, he should be given CWGC status, but perhaps that is only if he died from related injuries? In any case it might show up on his death cert.

He could be RFA or RHA - always worth checking.

Check the local papers and see if it has anything on him.

For Robert Wilson, not listed on Glasgow Evening Times Roll of Honour. The Edmonton Regiment was previously 101st Regiment but that didn't help much. I have to pass on this one.

Whilst looking for William Tennant. I came across this man. It's not the one you are looking for but he is another Airdrie (well near Airdrie) man in the CEF just like the last one I looked up.

TENNANT, WILLIAM
Nationality: Canadian
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Canadian Machine Gun Corps
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Age: 32
Date of Death: 03/10/1918
Service No: 3310454
Additional information: Son of Robert and Anne Liddell Tennant, of 90, Burton St., Hamilton, Ontario. Native of Greengairs, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: III. D. 11.
Cemetery: HAYNECOURT BRITISH CEMETERY

Hi Adam,

I had a wee look at the above link you sent and I'm pretty sure R. Wilson's next of kin is Mrs G. Wilson. He states he wasn't married so this would have been his mother which would make sense as his father James died in 1903.

His mother's name was Marion though . . . . . ?

At the top left corner, I noticed "2nd Bn. N.E." (then the word triplicate). I know I'm grasping at straws here but could it be North Edmonton? as in West Ontario, East Alberta and all that jazz?

It does confirm that the man I thought it might have been initially (18409) was possibly yet another R. Wilson from Coatbridge/Airdrie district. The CWGC entry and the Attestation Paper both have the same number.
