I just read this by Terry Denham on GWF and thought it would be useful info to have here - I hope he doesn't mind me copying it.
"CWGC are not responsible for maintaining Commonwealth War Graves in the UK which have private memorials - as this one does. The relatives at the time erected the memorial and it is their property. They would have been offered a CWGC stone when they became available but obviously declined the offer. Had they accepted, CWGC would have maintained it.
CWGC inspects these private memorials every couple of years or so to see whether the name is still visible - not to see if the memorial is in 'good' condition (many are not). This one looks about the same as many I have seen.
You should email the CWGC UK Area Office though and draw their attention to this memorial in case they have not inspected it for some time. If the memorial gets into a state too far gone, they will seek to get permission to erect an official stone. You can do this via the CWGC website. " |
