Hi
I cannot seem to find as forum that is used for general discussions. As I am 6,000 miles south of Scotland I have no information to post in the local area forums.
However. For information, I have stood upon the Magersfontein Batlefield where the Highland Brigade met it's 'Waterloo' during the Anglo Boer War.
Firstly we climbed the hill that contains the Highland Brigade Memorial, then to the Museum, on to the lookout point that overlooks the Boer Trenches. Then a drive round the Battlefield itself looking at the various memorials that are spread around.
Really awesome. I will be back there in September.

I had a quick look at the pics forum. I see a list of Boer War memorials for South Africa.
Places like Magersfontein are a minor problem. Although the Highland Brigade Memorial is situated on a hill. There are thrre memorials with names, plus an officers only memorial. Some distance away in Modder River is the Doorns 'A' cemetery which has a 1899-1902 memorial listing the same Highlanders. On the road to Ritchie, a few kilometers away is a second memorial with Highlanders. Then there is the main 1899-1902 memorial in Kimberley again listing the names. Gen Wauchope is actually listed in 9 places that I know of!
I have all my photographs in a database, plus filed in Cemetery Directory and Unit Directory. I will sort out all the Scots and cut them to CD. I think that posting them to 'The Bucket' would be a helluva task.

I have sorted out my Photobucket in anticipation. I read the list of casualtuies mentioned on the Howick Memorial and I have POTT's headstone from Kimberley on file.

I saw mention of the name Wauchope and remembered that I posted his memorial in St Giles cathedral on the war memorials project here http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=2977&highlight=wauchope&mforum=warmemscot
If you put his name into the search engine on the other forum, it should bring up quite a bit of info.
If your interest is specifically the African wars, we also occasionally come across family gravestones here in Scotland that mention someone having died in the Boer war. I came across one such on Monday that I have yet to post.

Hi Paul
My interests are everything within the South African borders. There is another project which originally started out concentrating on South African war dead, but it soon diversified. This is always a danger. Loosing direction. They have numerous volunteers, I am on my own but I seem to get a lot more done as I stay focused.
I had a long discussion with the author of the book WINGFIELD, it is the story of a wartime Royal Naval Air Station near Cape Town. When I asked about the casualrties he had listed he replied that he had not researched them, the book was about the Air Station not the people.
I am concentrating on South Africa, no where else.
