I saw this headstone in one of Anne's posts for Lambhill Cemetery in Glasgow

The lettering is in white but all other CWGC headstones have black lettering. Has this been done privately I wonder?

I have never noticed one with white lettering before. Could it be a private stone made to look like a CWGC one?

If you don't mind me poaching on your thread, does anyone know why some stones are granite and others limestone?

I've just come across another one, again in Lambhill Cemetery.

Neither of them have anything in common that's obvious except both men killed in WW2 - maybe white lettering was an option not used very often?

I think most WW2 stones are limestone and I think if any of the original Scottish granite stones are replaced they use the standard CWGC limestone as well. I prefer the granite ones.

thanks, that makes sense. I have only seen granite on WW1 stones but have seen an occasional WW1 stone in Limestone.

Hi

I am a little late responding to this one, newbie.

The majority of CWGC Headstone in South Africa are this configeration.

There are some cemeteries that contain the usual white stone and black letters, but in many instances they have not stood the test of time. The white stone is soft and soon weathers. The black stone is still in great shape.

Matbe to location of the graves would determine the tyoe of stone used

Colyn

That's very interesting that SA graves are granite as well. Could you post a photograph of one to see what it looks like.

I wonder if it is Scottish granite or local stone which has been used?

Regards

Adam

Hi

In actual fact the South African stone is Paarl Grey Granite for WWI and Rustenberg Granite for WWII.

Colyn,

When posting from Photobucket, select and copy the code in the "IMG Code" line. This will enable you to post the photos here.

I've amended your post above to show the pictures.

Regards,

David

Hi David

Thanks for that.

I am busy compiling my 'Jocks' and I have signed up for the Memorial Project so I can post the Magersfontein pics.

Should I post the Scots graves in there as well?

Scots graves should probably go on this site.

We were concentrating on graves in Scotland rather than Scottish graves but we'll set up a section for Scots buried overseas.

Hi

I was just showing a sample of the two different headstone materials, and the inscription thereon.

I have a number of Scots headstones/markers mainly from the Boer War which I will post, the Memorials I will post on the memorial site.

Regards from Cape Town
