Hello
My name is Darrell and I am a 24 yr member of Canada's Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. I am a member of the Royal Canadian Dragoons but currently posted to a Reserve Armoured Recce Regiment as their full-time Operation NCO.
I am 42 this year and have a lovely wife and two young daughters (5&10 yrs).
My hobby is collecting Military Medals to Canadian First War Cavalrymen and Second War Canadian Armoured soldiers. I haven't a large collection and, so far, have only one buried in Scotland.
I am unsure how much I can contribute here or at what frequency but have joined at member Anne A's urging so that I might post some details of a soldier who grave she took a photo of for me. Details to follow shortly in Cadder Cemetery thread.
My only other connection to Scotland is having served recently in Afghanistan under command of RAF Regt troops from Lossiemouth. Fine bunch of soldiers all.

Welcome Darrell, many of the war memorials around here have the names of men who served with Canadian units. Presumably they moved from Scotland to Canada in the years prior to 1914 and were then commemorated here by those who stayed behind.

I have seen plenty of examples of the situation you mentioned above. Usually, but certainly not always, these men came to Canada for various reasons and the start of the Great War was a way for them to return back to the UK.; by joining the CEF. Some were merely homesick, some couldn't make a go of it in Canada, and many flocked to the colours out of pure Patriotism. I imagine many were a combination of all three.
If any members find a Scottish connection and require some help here(I'm only a short drive from New Scotland or Nova Scotia) please don't hesitate to ask.

Welcome to the Forum Darrell!
I just read through the information you added on Archibald Henderson.
It makes such a difference knowing more about individual men rather than just seeing a name and numbers on a stone - it makes then more 'real' somehow.

My Great-Grandfather was one of the Scots who had emigrated to Canada prior to the Great War but he made his way back over here escorted all the way by the men of the 28th Bn.CEF. He served in the Canadian Army from 1914 to the 11th Novemebr, 1918. Yes, he was discharged the day the armistice was declared.

There ya go, a fine example of what we're talking about. 
And what happened to your GGF upon discharge from the CEF? Did he return to Canada?
Some did and some did not.

Anyway, Canadians are only Scotsmen who could swim. GG dad just didn't fancy doing the return leg.
