James Hyslop Pte KOSB 27 April 1920
The above inscription appears on my local war memorial at Colvend but I cannot find any info. on him.
Neither CWGC, Scottish Death Registers, nor ancestry.com have any record - I did find a medal card at National Archives for a James D Hyslop KOSB.
Anybody got any ideas? |

Hi Ken,
I just had a look over on the War Memorials Forum but I couldn't see a James Hyslop on the Parish Church Memorial - is there another church in Colvend which we haven't got a note of?
I noticed on Colvend's Civic Memorial there's a William Hyslop (14th H.L.I.) with a date of death listed as 22nd October 1917 but he's listed on CWGC as having died 22nd October 1916.
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=732612
Could it be a case of mistaken identity or regiment somewhere along the line?

I am a bit confused here. The main memorial for Colvend is in grounds of the parish church and is posted here http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=549&mforum=warmemscot and you can see that his name does not appear. There are 2 other memorials on the outside wall of the church, one is a WW1 roll of honour and the other for WW2 but his name does not appear on either.
I am fairly familiar with the area and cannot think of another memorial. Which memorial does his name appear on?
There is a James Blyth with that date, is it him that you mean?

Paul/Ken
I also looked on CWGC for a Blyth when I noticed the same date.
I couldn't find any in K.O.S.B. let alone having this date of death.

Hi everyone - sorry put to down to senior moment
I did mean to post James Blyth Pte KOSB 27 April 1920.
I have also found a medal card for a William James Blyth KOSB so am following that line for the moment.
Sorry again - Ken |

This reply is for Anne
You mentioned the disparity of dates for William Hyslop 1916 or 1917.
From what I can find the 14th Battalion HLI were with 120th Brigade, 40th Division at Loos until the end of October 1916 and thereafter on the Somme.
Given the CWG is at the Loos Memorial I guess the 1916 is correct.
