In the Mar and Valley Cemeteries Stirling topic Anne A can't identify this man:

JOHN MORRIS McLAUGHLAN, born 16th February 1897
Killed in action in France 23rd October 1916 (age 19)
Grandson of John & Ann Morris (nee Grant)

I've found this possible candidate on the SNWM database but can't find him on CWGC one. Is it the same man?

McLAUGHLIN, J
Firstname J
Service Number 25916
Date Death 23/10/1916
Decoration
Place of birth
Other 2nd Bn.
SNWM roll THE CAMERONIANS (SCOTTISH RIFLES)
Rank Pte

Found him at last. His initial and first name is different but I am sure it is he. If he is listed on the 1901 census, he may be John Isaac or Isaac John.

Name: McLAUGHLIN, ISAAC
Initials: I
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Date of Death: 23/10/1916
Service No: 25916
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 4 D.
Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL

From Birth Certificate:

John Morris McLachlan, born 16th February 1897 at 4 .....? Place, Stirling, illegitimate son of John McLachlan, Carter of 60 Cowane? Street, Stirling and Margaret Ann (Maggie) Grant Morris, Domestic Servant.

Already we seem to have umpteen variants of the spelling of his surname:

McLachlan - on his Birth Certificate
McLauchlan - on his grandparents gravestone (I originally thought it was McLaughlan)
McLaughlin - if the SNWM and CWGC entries are for the same man

BUT . . . . . . . Where does the Isaac come from????

I can already think of at least another half a dozen variations of the surname!

Anne

Well the regiment and service number on SNWM and CWGC is the same, that makes it the same man. And helpfully the date of death is the same, but as for surname spelling and different first name. Confused

You could try his medal index card I suppose but not sure how that would help whether it was the same as a variant you have or something different entirely.

Local newspaper entry?
