About 2 miles to the west of Borgue along a side road to the left (south).

Name: ELMS, FRANCIS JAMES

Date of Death: 10/10/1918
Service No: 50656
Additional information: Son of James and Lydia Bertha Elms, of 277, Lewisham High Rd., London. Born in London.
Cemetery: Kirkandrews Old Churchyard, near East wall.
This newspaper report explains how a soldier from London comes to be buried in a churchyard near Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire:
The RMS Leinster was sunk by UB 123 in Dublin Bay on 10th October 1918 - over 500 lives were lost. The body of L/Cpl Elms was found on Saturday, 9th November and he was buried the following Wednesday.
Hopefully, someone will be able to visit Kirkandrews Old Churchyard and photograph L/Cpl Elms' headstone. His is the only CWGC burial at this site.

L/Corp Elms was one of eleven bodies (that I have identified so far) washed ashore in SW Scotland.

Drove thro' snow and fog to this cemetery today and found......
The view is across Wigtown Bay to Garlieston and the Isle of Whithorn.

Interesting, I wonder why it was replaced? Obviously a new stone and with an additional inscription. I have never heard of CWGC placing a non pattern stone.

The original had the name wrong - but why wait until 2002????
Curious. Maybe the guy who runs the "kirkyards" site would know. A man called James Bell - anyone know him???

Made contact with James Bell and he tells me that a member of L/Corp. Elms family commission a new stone in 2002 primarily to correct the mis-spelling of the name (Elims)
