Photos very kindly supplied by Crieghton Parry, great nephew of Crichton James Lees. (Perth Cemetery [China Wall], Belgium)
Crieghton was named after his great uncle who is commemorated on the family's gravestone in New Monkland Cemetery.
Name: LEES, CRICHTON JAMES
Initials: C J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Gunner
Regiment/Service: Royal Garrison Artillery
Unit Text: 73rd Heavy Artillery Group
Age: 22
Date of Death: 31/07/1917
Service No: 78532
Additional information: Son of James McLintock and Jeanie Lees (nee Crichton), of 67, Robertson St., Airdrie. SNWM lists birthplace as New Monkland, Lanarkshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Sp. Mem. A. 2.
Cemetery: PERTH CEMETERY (CHINA WALL)
Crieghton wrote: "The story behind the known to be buried in this graveyard is this, the cemetery was a makeshift graveyard during the battles around Ypres and owing to its position was a bit of a mess - as more and more men were buried there it became rather full, because of shell damage and re burials grave positions were lost. Due to its constant use it was adopted as a graveyard at the end of the war and then taken over by CWG as more and more bodies found in the area where added there. CWG tidied it up reburied the ones they could etc So at one point he had a established grave there but it was lost during the establishment of the cemetery. I do remember seeing a photograph of my great grand mother standing over the grave in the 20's."
He adds that he recalls seeing a photograph of his great grand mother standing over the grave in the 20's and will forward a copy if 're-discovered.
See page 9 of this thread for the family gravestone in New Monkland. |
